The way they work, they put down all of filament A in the layer, then
all of filament B, etc, then go back to A for the next layer.  Filament
switches are considered expensive.

The problem is that there's usually tiny air gaps between the filaments,
so you get lots of tiny lenses.  The above was overextruded a LOT and
printed HOT to try to remove those pockets, as an experiment in printing
PETG lenses.  Even so, the top and bottom layers (unless printed against
a smooth print plate) would have extrusion lines.

You would print light barriers (opaque) into the back of the panel to
guide the light to where you wanted it.

Cheap 8-bit microcontrollers, plus no need.
