The difference is that in Iran the religion is promoted by the government, on a population which is often far less religious than the government is, while in the US the government specifically is separated from religious practices and members of the population attempt to impose them upon it. The degree to which religion has become political in the US is pretty shocking, though, and it's almost like Ireland or Iran in that regard. There are few first-world countries in the world where that is the case. I show this to European Christians and they just feel embarrased by it: http://www.panix.com/~kludge/liberty.jpg --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis."
