My Nikon, too, has auto-focus in macro mode.  But it's often not truly 
focused.  I usually get the auto-focus to set up, do the "half-shutter" 
lock-in, then move the camera in and out to select the sharpest details
seen in the display.
Then I go for "full-shutter".

Yeah.  Miky-maus, I know...
