  It's probably crippled (no coverage) in smaller towns in outback
areas.

  Not the same thing, but on our 2019 (:-() trip, we used Woolworths
Mobile - who also are using part of the Telstra network - (for data) and
this is part of our experience (before we gave up on them and used only
real Telstra):

NSW: OK in Broken Hill. No coverage in Tibooburra.

QLD:
No coverage in Thargomindah, Quilpy, Aughatella, Tambo and Blackall.
OK in Charleville and Longreach.

  So OK in somewhat bigger towns, no coverage in small(er) towns.
