Their 3G definately works for data as well - I've been using two
ALDI Mobile SIMs in 3G mobile broadband modems over the last year.
Never tried in any 4G-capable hardware, but I don't doubt it works.

Not to do with whatever nonsense the person you talked to said
about 3G and 4G, but they don't use the entire Telstra network
so apparantly there are ALDI black-spots out there that would
still work with a real Telstra SIM.

Compared to Optus they've still got far better coverage though.
It doesn't seem to be very crippled at all in rural Vic.
