  Prices here (The Netherlands) start at about USD 275 (and go even to
some USD 5500 (boggle!))..

  Prices have not gone up much. A laptop comparable to my 5-year old
one, is somewhat more expensive, but has a 1TB SSD instead of a HDD,

  Go wash your mouth, boy! You're talking about some serious machines
and they/mine can do *much* more than email, actually it does hardly any
email! Mine even runs a News server! How about them Apples!? Oops!
