Is that true? I've a vague recollection of visiting the Ordnance Survey
decades ago. I think it may have been a school trip. I don't think I was
up to thinking about map projections at that point (though I was fond of
OS maps, especially the old one-inch ones).

It would seem that GPS and Open Street Map both use WGS84, which is
essentially lat. and long.:

<https://osmdata.openstreetmap.de/info/projections.html> :

"OpenStreetMap uses the WGS84 spatial reference system used by the
Global Positioning System (GPS). It uses geographic coordinates between
-180° and 180° longitude and -90° and 90° latitude. So this is the
'native' OSM format."

This fits with my belief, which is that lat. and long. are fundamental.
Projections are a messy layer that must be added if one wants a plan
view for a human to look at.

Indeed, a long time ago I worked in a department making inertial
navigation systems¹ - and that was how it was.

¹The core of an IN is a gyro-stabilised platform carrying three
accelerometers at right angles to each other. By double integrating
their outputs, one knows how far one has gone and in what direction. If
one knows where one was, one knows where one is. Equally, if you were
lost, then you're still lost.
