The marvels of the English passive! Preferred by whom? Not by lar3ryca, 
not by me, not by the satnav apps I've used.

Lat. and long. are not at all obsolete. They are an excellent way of 
specifying a point on the Earth, while avoiding the complication that 
goes with projections.
