Sure, in that context it makes sense. You're probably one of the very
few people here who does that kind of thing, and the context in which
you were discussing this may not have been clear.

Do you mean stdin, or do you mean a keyboard?
A program that can run with its stdin attached to a pipe can be
extraordinarily useful. The Unix I/O system happens to be designed so
that if a program can read from a pipe, it can transparently read from a
keyboard. The grep command, for example, is rarely used with input from
a keyboard, and it's not really designed for it -- but since it's not
specifically designed *not* to handle it, it can do it. It's not a
particularly useful thing to do, but there's no reason for grep to go
out of its way to prevent it.
I may have inadvertently given the impression that it's very common to
run a program on Unix with input from the keyboard, and to type a whole
bunch of lines of text terminated by Ctrl-D. In fact I think that's not
a particularly common thing to do in practice. But the possibility of
running a program that way is always there, and that extra flexibility
can come in handy.
If I wanted to run, say, a histogram program with a trival test case
consisting of 3 lines, I could do it like this:
% ./histogram
one
two
three
^D
[output appears here]
%
but I'd be more likely to do something like this:
% ( echo one ; echo two ; echo three ) | ./histogram
or
% printf "one\ntwo\nthree\n" | ./histogram
The latter two approaches have the advantage that the commands are
recorded in the shell's command history, so I can recall the command,
make minor edits, and run it again.
All this is possible because the program reads arbitrary text data from
stdin and doesn't make any assumptions about what stdin is connected to.

Imagine how confusing it would be if a program designed to read some
arbitrary input, do some filtering on it, and write the tranformed
output were to print random prompts interspersed with its output.
Certainly most programs that are primarily intended for interactive
input should display some kind of prompt. Programs that are able to
read any arbitrary input (and that therefore happen to be able to
process keyboard input) usually don't prompt. *Some* programs are able
to detect what kind of input they're receiving, and change their
behavior accordingly. On the other hand, a command-line option is
another way to do that.
