If you had merely said that it's messy, I doubt that anyone would
have disagreed. It *is* messy, or rather it can be. But you gave
the impression (at least to me) that you object to the whole idea
of an end-of-file condition when reading from a keyboard.
A C program running on Unix and reading from a keyboard will
encounter an end-of-file condition if the user types Ctrl-D,
unless the program takes (system-specific) steps to avoid it.
That's what Ctrl-D *means* on Unix. There are long-standing reasons
for that behavior. You don't like it? Fine, you don't have to.
Say so and move on. But you might consider acknowledging that it's
part of a coherent design, where things other than disk files can be
treated as files and processed by programs that weren't specifically
designed to work with keyboard input.

Of course there are alternatives. As we say in the Perl community,
TMTOWTDI (there's more than one way to do it).
Do you understand the usual C `while ((c = getchar()) != EOF)` idiom?
Do you think it's so unsalvageably bad that you *have* to come up with
an alternative?
My criticism of your alternative is that it's not obviously reliable,
that it's unnecessarily complex, and that it's just not necessary.

Let me think, how many potential problems did I point out with that
approach? Even if it's 100% reliable, it's more complex *in C* than the
usual idiom.
When I program in a different language, I try to write idiomatic code in
that language. YMMV.
The conventional `while ((c = getchar()) != EOF)` loop has its own
advantages. Do you deny that?

Sorry, what exactly "sucks"?
Unix has a lot of programs that read from stdin (or from one or more
named files) and write to stdout. Any such program *can* be used
with stdin coming from a keyboard (or a file, or a pipe, or ...).
It's not going to be particularly user-friendly when reading from
a keyboard. In particular, it's not going to print a prompt unless
it goes out of its way to do so. (grep never prompts, for example,
and it wouldn't make much sense for it to do so.)
A program that's specifically intended to be used interactively,
such as a text editor, will take steps to be more user-friendly --
and it won't do a very good job of taking its input from a file.
Figuring out how to trigger an end-of-file condition for a program
reading from stdin shouldn't be as difficult as you make it out
to be. Just type Ctrl-D (Unix) or Ctrl-Z (Windows) immediately
after typing Enter, or before typing anything if you want to provide
empty input. You can also trigger end-of-file after a partial line
if you want to by typing Ctrl-D twice (I'm not sure how it works
on Windows).
This is basic knowledge about how a particular OS works.
