In fact, using gcc 4.2.1 on Solaris 9, my test program initially
defined:
struct __attribute__ ((__packed__)) packed_struct {
char c;
int n;
};
but a reference to n didn't trap as I expected. Investigation showed
that the struct object (defined locally, thus on the "stack") was
allocated at an odd address, causing n to be correctly aligned. I had
to change the declaration to:
struct __attribute__ ((__packed__)) packed_struct {
int n0;
char c;
int n1;
};
to demonstrate the problem.
But there's nothing special about static allocation. malloc() return a
maximally aligned pointer, so if I had malloced the struct object I
wouldn't have had to add the second int member to force the trap, but
either static or automatic allocation allows the compiler to allocate at
an odd address if there's an advantage in doing so.
Of course you shouldn't depend on this behavior.
