Quarterdeck was a popular add-on.

Windows has gotten better and doesn't need third party crutches to be
useful. Sometimes it regresses, though. ANSI.sys was removed in XP, iirc.
Most people didn't notice but we used a early version of Raima's database
and the interface used ncurses. Some games were affected too so DOSBox had
been developed by a third party and it supported the ANSI escape sequences
to control the cursor.
