As I said else thread, I should have said broken and booby trapped code.
Yes a little stand alone program is safe, but as soon as you have a
larger application with pointers being passed around, the clock starts
ticking..
How many posts have there been here over the years where someone posts
some code that modifies a string literal and wonders why the program
crashes? Now what if the code that caused a crash was only called on a
rare condition? It may well (and older code often wasn't very
thoroughly tested, especially in the corners) have escaped into the wild
only to crash months or even years later. That code was broken.

Because it also broke C++ code, that was one of the boldest decisions
the C++ committee made. I was at the last ACCU conference before the
C++ standard was released and this was a hotly debated issue. I'm sure
most who where there came away agreeing the gains outweighed the cost,
which was breaking dangerous code...
