All of the modern compilers I'm aware of default to placing string literals in a write only segment, so they are effectively const. Even prior to that, duplicate string literals were often eliminated, so changing one instance would change them all. When Sun changed the default behaviour of their compiler to place string literals in a write only segment, a large number of bugs in older parts of the Solaris code base where flushed out. -- Ian
