Rather than blindly throwing random things at the problem, why not
figure out what is actually *causing* the performance issue so you can
fix it with precision rather than just guessing?

Some questions - more detail is better:

What are the exact symptoms of the problem?

What model and year Mac is this?

How much physical RAM is installed?

How much free space is available on the startup drive?
