Because you were too stupid to use them. The only trouble I have ever had is when buying a card with just one tiny packet of beer brewing yeast on it. That was so light that the system couldn't work out that I had put it in the bag. They have since fixed that and it works fine now. Ours are so popular that there is always a wait for self checkout at normal shopping times and its only at the times when most aren't shopping that there is no wait. And the queue at the self checkout is always quicker even in busy times because you don't queue for the actual checkout, the queue is for all of them. The problem is that neither Coles nor Woolys have enough of them, just 6 in the case of Woolys and 8 in the case of Coles.
