El Capitan / SSL / Safari - failure to connect

I'm doing OK with El Capitan - testing on a separate partition but 
using all my stuff.

But I am losing my mind with one issue. I can not load SSL sites 
(https) in Safari. They're fine in other browsers.

Safari Can't Open the Page
Safari can't open the page "https://facebook.com" because Safari can't 
establish a secure connection to the server "facebook.com".

Worse, it's not absolute! There are a very few SSL sites that do load. 
I've tried every bookmarked SSL site I have and maybe 4 connected. My 
bank's works. Grrr.

Googling gave me one hit from an early El Capitan beta claiming Avast 
was the cause. I don't have that but did have Sophus AntiVirus. Note 
the *had*. I uninstalled it and still no luck.

I have ditched stored passwords for some trial sites. I have ditched 
cookies & caches.

Any ideas?
