Can't argue with unnecessary; there are indeed plenty of other utilities 
that will operate the protocol. However, it is _convenient_: usually, if 
I find reference to an FTP resource, I have the browser open (where I 
found the reference, almost always!), but _don't_ have the "FTP program" 
open; furthermore, in a browser I just click, whereas to use the FTP 
program I'd at least have to copy and paste something.

As for this "effort to maintain": what effort - what is there to 
maintain? As someone has pointed out the protocol is 50 years old, so 
the code to implement it doesn't need a lot of maintaining! Of course, 
it isn't zero effort as other changes you make might break it, but the 
effort involved is surely minimal.
