You can already override the FTP handler within Windows per protocol 
(http, ftp, etc) e.g.

<http://andyburns.uk/misc/ftp-protocol-handler.png>

At the moment that works if I create a shortcut to an FTP URL, and 
launch it from windows explorer, within firefox it still knows about FTP 
links internally, so it doesn't lauch an external handler, but once we 
get to FFv90 and it gives up FTP handling, I'd expect it to launch the 
O/S specified handler.

AFAIK you can do this in win7 or later (I have written software that 
adds its own protocols and associated handlers) IIRC you're an XP user, 
might not work for you ...
