I recently played through DA:O, and am now playing "Elder Scrolls:
Oblivion" (ugh, all these colonated names...).

My impression thus far is that while DA:O has its impressive points
(looks really nice, very intuitive and usable control/magic system), and
was at least interesting story-wise, in the end it was sort of "meh."

I much prefer the far vaster environment in ES:O and the sense that one
is actually free to make decisions and go on one's own way; DA:O by
comparison felt very very forced and linear, despite having side quests,
and the fact that there were in the end really only a small number of
locations on every map which one just sort of jumped between was really
disappointing.  There are obviously big technical challenges in allowing
the player to roam the countryside at will, but games like ES:O (etc)
demonstrate that it's quite possible to do well.

[I guess DA:O follows the usual EA playbook:  impressive at first
glance, but ultimately disappointing.]
