What do you mean retain rights to the management. Depends on the open source
license, but generally if you make the source open people can use it and
alter it.

They can do that - but others can fork it... or make their own versions.

It does not. For example, with WebKit, Apple has 100% control of what goes
into WebKit (and what does not). Google can fork it and make Blink (and they
did!) but that does not change that Apple and Apple alone is 100% in control
of WebKit (and Google is in control of Blink).
