Again, it depends on which license, but in general just because you open
source code does not mean you cannot modify it yourself.

Heck, you do not even need to have your modified versions be open source, as
long as the original code is not licensed in that way.

In other words, you create a project: MyCoolProject

You then make it open source under the GPL.

Someone else publishes a product based on that code: CoolerProject. They
have to follow the license... with the GPL they have to make it open source.
With some licenses they allow for greater freedom for others... under the
BSD license they would NOT have to make their modifications open source.

Anyway, you then make MyCoolProject II... based on the same codebase as your
first project. YOU do not have to make that open source even if you licensed
the first version under the GPL.
