Blowing money? But Apple customers have been hit by the recession as well.

Right - just not as much as the PC market in general. If it was just
economics you would think the higher prices products would be hurt more.

I do think people are delaying desktop / laptop purchases for longer - there
is less need for upgrades (the older ones still work fairly well with
current software) and they have new toys to play with. But the economy also
plays a part. In other words, I think both "stories" have some truth to
them. I think Macs are doing better than the PC market for the same reason
they have for the last many years - Apple makes products which have a higher
user satisfaction rating. Heck, I just picked up a cheapola PC for my young
kids. It came with Windows 8 and ran so poorly it was not worth it - rated
3.3 on Windows rating and Flash videos from PBSKids would not even play
without stuttering. Returned the piece of junk and got a used mini for a bit
more but not much. And it will surely work much better.
