I discovered recently (indirectly) that UniPrint/Server seems to
offer the printer via the JetDirect protocol. I presume R-Comp
also have their own printing protocol, which is in addition to
JetDirect.

!Printers can access any printer via JetDirect, using print to
file by means of either JetDirectFS or RemotePrinterFS. That
gives you a way to transport data to the printer, but of course
you have to have a RISC OS printer driver for your chosen printer
so that it can generate a data stream that makes sense to the
printer.

In case it's not already clear, !Printers rolls two distinct tasks
into one: (1) turning the page into a data stream that the printer
can understand and use to print a good representation of the page;
(2) transporting that data stream to the printer, be it by serial,
parallel, USB, network or file[1].

So, broadly, you can either:

a) use a RISC OS printer driver, usually Gutenprint or PostScript
nowadays, and transport the data to the printer via the JetDirect
protocol. The printer can be connected:

* directly to the Risc PC via serial;
* directly to the Risc PC via parallel;
* directly to your network if it's a network printer;
* indirectly to your network via a network print server box;
* indirectly to your network via UniPrint/server;
* (can it be connected to a Risc PC via USB? I don't know. A
  printer can be connected to an Iyonix or BeagleBoard via USB,
  but Risc PCs normally use the Simtec USB stack, and I don't
  know whether it supports printing.)

b) use R-Comp-s proprietary printing protocol via UniPrint/Server.

Note that your choice of connection scheme will affect what devices
other than the printer have to be turned on and running in order to
print from the different computers.

Dave

[1] And the "file" mechanism is extendable, so if someone invents
a new transport medium, in principle a module can be written to
interface with !Printers and transport the data stream over the
new medium. Unlikely, but I add the information for completeness.
