I've been looking for *short* cables that go from Lightning to micro and mini USB and also similar cables for USB-c. No success though.

I find it hard to believe they don't exist. Anyone know of any? Ideally less than 6"

Not for USB-C though, which is a bit annoying. I'd quite like some short
USB-C to Lightning and to Micro-USB cables.

Life's hard on the bleeding edge! (New 15" touchbar MBP :-)

until the rest of the world catches up with usb-c, adapters will be
required.

it's called progress.

And while we're at it, a USB-C to USB-C hub for not stupid money. 4
ports seems like a lot but is not enough.

In some apps, yes. Hipchat (instant messaging) has one tap buttons in
the touchbar to quickly set away/do not disturb statuses, and that's
pretty perfect. A scrubber appears when videos are being played, even in
Safari. So there are definitely some useful things in there.

Oh it definitely was, but it was a little different. No-one was saying
that the USB connector was limiting, they were instead saying that the
lack of floppy drive was a mistake. How were users going to transport
files to each other?

So yeah, a little different because at least the connectors were
standard. It wasn't USB only either - still had ethernet, RJ-45,
err....-think- that one had Firewire too? Not sure. But yeah - not "USB
only" so much as "we believe floppies are dead and people should switch
to using the network or USB keys to transfer files'. That was the fuss.

Ian

The Power Macintosh G3 (Blue & White) was introduced in January 1999 and
it was the first Mac with Firewire. It was also the only desktop Mac
with both USB and ADB. It had no floppy drive and an optional Zip drive.

Apple introduced USB with the original iMac in May 1998 (available
August 1998). USB 1.1, 10/100 Ethernet, modem, IR, audio in and out.

Connectivity on the iMac didn't change (apart from dropping IR) until
the October 1999 revision, which added Firewire in all but the entry
level model (also VGA output).

Apple's choice seemed to match my experience: I got a Zip drive for my
PowerMac 7600 more than a year before the iMac was announced, and had a
SCSI CD writer. Not many people I knew were still using floppies to
exchange files by 1998, and they were even less useful for backups.

the outrage was from ignorant people who *thought* the mac needed a
floppy to upgrade its bios or emergency boot disk.

Yeah, this was it - -the- iMac. The internet Mac. That was the whole

yep.

people hate change and like to complain, no matter what it is.

note that the imac was *not* the first mac to lack a floppy drive. that
title goes to the powerbook duo in 1992.

few people complained about it then because it didn't actually matter.
the smaller size of the duo was a far bigger advantage every single day
rather than having the ability to use a floppy once in a while.

transferring files between computers could be done *much* faster using
phonenet cables versus dealing with floppies.

unfortunately, pcs didn't have that option, so they were stuck with
floppies and couldn't comprehend that there was any other way.

also note is that in 1998, the year the imac came out, was the same
year that one of the only two floppy disk manufacturers closed down due
to shrinking demand.

floppies were on their way out *before* the imac was released.

That isn't what I remember.

What I recall is that the complaints were about what people felt was the
removal of the most common and convenient way of exchanging files. I
don't ever recall hearing about BIOS or boot disks.

they might have thought that, but filesharing was easier and faster,
particularly when the files couldn't fit on a 1.4 meg floppy, which was
often.

the mistake apple made was not including a cd *burner* instead of a
cdrom drive (they did do that later on). that would have eliminated
most of the complaints. 650 meg was a *lot* in 1998.

> I don't ever recall hearing about BIOS or boot disks.

pc users said that because back then, a pc *had* to have a floppy drive
in case something went wrong with the boot drive, so they just assumed
a mac also needed a floppy to deal with similar situations. it didn't.

Well, you don't get too many PC user view points in a mac group do you. And,
as far as PC [Widoze] users back then were concerned, if it was Apple then it
was automatically crap.

it still is for a lot of people.

the point is that one of flaws pc users kept parroting was the imac
didn't have a floppy, oblivious to the fact it didn't actually matter
anywhere near as much as they thought it did.

today, you hear 'no dvd drive', except that many pcs no longer ship
with dvd drives either.
