No, they're both legacy partition tables.

Interesting, I also have the original mbr, which lilo saved on
installation.

OS.

Disk 1 is booted by the BIOS, and is where the grub loader should go,
as in ...
	grub-install /dev/sda

No, this is old hardware, and I still use W2k to do long
geo-conversion and video conversion jobs, which would take too long in
a virtual partition.

Yes.

What happens in each case is that the 'other' Windows is drive W:

No, I don't think that's true. Each version of Windows was installed
to and always has had a system drive letter of C: The only difference
between hibernation working and not is the BIOS HD order. It might
be, probably is, that the there is some setting in the Registry or
elsewhere which contains a full, hard path to the hibernation file
rather than a drive letter - something like disk0/rdisk0/partition1,
but I've not been able to find it. I tried disabling hibernation,
dumping the entire registry, reenabling again, dumping again, and then
comparing the two dumps line by line. However, the only settings that
changed involved drive letters.

When Windows 7 was installed, the other disk was disconnected, to
avoid the W7 installation breaking anything on it.
