Verandah Location - 391 S. Academy St. Cary NC 27511 919-307-7070 Ambiance - We were greeted and seated promptly in a spacious and nearly empty dining room. (This was at 6:45pm on a Tuesday evening. We had a reservation.) Sparkling-clean heavy-weight utensils topped a light green cloth napkin, set on a glossy black laminate-topped table. Seating was comfortable. Everything was new and without blemish. The rest rooms were antiseptically clean, equal to the best I've ever seen. Background music was absent, and this contributed to a pleasantly quiet dining experience. Service - A friendly and effective server. Several check-backs during the meal. Thank you, Jessica! Fare - Verandah headlines itself as Casual Southern but the menu is standard American cuisine prepared with Continental pretensions. Examples: Southerners eat green beans but Verandah serves Haricot Vert; Southerners eat turnip greens but Verandah serves Broccolini. Vegetarians will find few options. https://verandahcary.com/dinner/ We were served a basket of warm biscuits and frozen honey butter. The biscuits were small and dense, inferior to those served at Fast Food outlets. Disappointing. Special Lady ordered Crab Cakes with Napa Cabbage, Haricot Vert, Asparagus, Fingerling Potatoes, Red Pepper Remoulade ($17.50). She reported that the food was tasty but only warm, not hot. I ordered Bone-in Pork with smoked Gouda Grits, Grilled Broccolini, Heirloom Tomato Vinaigrette ($19.50). Flavors were good but the food was barely warm. Presentation counts, and all items were plated in an eye-pleasing fashion. Portion sizes were "just right" and there was nothing to take home. Wake County sanitation rating - 93 as of 7/25/16. Website - https://verandahcary.com/ Overall rating - "C+". The tab came to $40 including tax. Suggested improvements - Hire the biscuit lady from Hardee's. Serve hot food on heated plates.
