In Iran - hehe :) - we've had it for > thousands of years :) I mean six or seven thousand years! But in Europe and especially in most areas of Asia this process has always been behind wars and various events. Iran has rich folklore about it. Russians, similarly, have some folklore about it that I know, even from centuries before Mongols were formed and arrived. One that comes to my mind (from a classical music piece by a half-Iranian Russian) is the story of "Prince Igor" and how he fought the vast, powerful, nomads that occupied just about everywhere to the south of Russia's southern borders (but still north of Iran - i.e. north of Caucasia). I don't remember the name of that nomadic kigdom and power right now, but the defeat of them (at last!) by the Russians by Prince Igor, is part of their history and folklore both because it was a very significant event. Speaking of that composer (Borodin), his father was a wealthy Iranian from Gorjestan (today's Georgia) who had properties and a house also in Saint Petersburg and while married to an Iranian got a Russian woman pregnant there, out of wedlock. Russian law didn't allow multiple marriages, so he kept that son and gave him someone else's last name, and his mother was told to others to be the son's "aunt." That's how he raised him, and he did an excellent job of that also. "Borodin" grew up to become a scientist (in chemistry there are some works to his credit) and since he was also trained for music, like many wealthy people of those days, he took music as his hobby. This is why, as brilliant as he was in both fields, there isn't that many works in music by him, cause his main job was doing science. Nevertheless, the few works that he wrote, including this "Prince Igor", are jewels in par with Tchaikovsky's works. So this farmer-nomad conflict is quite fundamental and old, and can single-handedly explain many historical events throughout thousands of years, even to this day and age. But as far as I know, today only Iran still harbors such nomadic mode of life in itself. And that's perhaps because of the geography, which has been able to maintain nomads and at the same time keeping them at safe distances from the farmers. Another feature from our pasts that is a direct consequence of such conflicts, is the need for constructing castles. Castles, basically, were built to protect farmers when nomads go through their region as part of their twice a year migration. So if you, anywhere in the world, see an old castle, you can bet that those people fought nomads for centuries. One cannot point at one or at the other in that conflict. Both sides were correct. So they simply were natural enemies of each other. And farmers of course won in the long term! -- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. www.avast.com
