I was once in a usenet group that was more active in
earlier times.  Back then there were more Canadians
that posted and they some times used the words 'British
North America'.  (Canada plus US plus maybe or maybe
not some of the Caribbean)

If something like the 'New World' is meant (All of
North America and all of South America) the number is
about a billion.

Then of course it might be interesting at times
comparing the surface area of various celestial
object with various areas on Earth.

The Earth is about 40 percent land in the northern
hemisphere and 20 percent land in the southern
hemisphere (give or take a few ice floes).

I guess I would have to use a slide rule or the
like to compare the surface area of the Earth's
oceans with the surface area of Venus.

The surface area of Mars is similar to the land
area of Earth (no oceans).

Then the surface area of Mercury is similar to
the surface area of the 'Old World' (Afro-Eurasia).

Ganymede, Titan, Callisto - similar to Mercury.

The Moon is similar in surface area to Africa
(there are probably no elephants on the Moon).

Then Triton, Pluto, and Eris are similar in
surface area to South America or Russia.

Any of the big 5 (China, US, Canada, Brazil,
or Australia) is similar in surface area to
Titania, the largest moon of Uranus.

The surface area of Ceres is similar to the
surface area of India, the surface area of Vesta
is similar in surface area to Pakistan.

Then there is the question.  Is the mass
of Ceres really similar to the mass of the
Earth's oceans?  Not quite sure about that
one.

_Bertrand Russell_ in the Russell-Einstein manifesto *that Einstein merely
