Einstein had participated in the work of Leo Szillard in Berlin.

They patented a piece of equipment, which only known use is as a part of 
a fast breeding reactor.

So: most likely they already had atomic bombs in Germany long before the 
USA had them.

Doesn't matter anyhow, but Einstein apparently had the intention, these 
bombs should be used against Germany first, while the US-population was 
much more 'pro-German' than 'pro-Japan', hence bombing Germany would be 
much less popular.

Also Germany was already totally destroyed and overrun by Us-forces, 
hence the story 'a-bombs saved lives, because they ended the war' 
wouldn't make any sense, if Germany got bombed.

The Manhattan project had a different objective:

bring physics itself under control by means of 'secrecy oath', which all 
participants had to swear.
