They are built up of phonemes which are the more basic units of speech, and the flowing together of phonemes is called co-articulation. Phoneticians have actually published data that lists how all the forty-odd phonemes used in English - it varies as bit from dialect to dialect - sound in in the 1600-odd possible phoneme pair combinations. It's important in synthesising natural sounding speech, and in processing natural speech to work out what people are actually saying. At least for those people who can say things worth paying attention to - who don't include the Scottish wanker. -- Bill Sloman, Sydney
