Its fairly clear that affluent Romans lived on fruit fish and meats,
mainly. No carbs at all. And not many vegetables, either. Beans maybe.

Carbs have always been the last resort of the lowest echelons of
society, to be eaten when nothing else was available, along with insects.

They had olive oil, and wine.

The massive wheat growing farms, across the Empire farmed by slaves,
went to the plebs as 'bread, and circuses'. Today it's 'Pizza, and
reality TV'

I don't think the Romans were great on cattle (if you go to Italy, only
the Northern plains are really suitable to graze cattle), but Cleopatra
allegedly liked a bath of asses milk.

In reality sheep and goats were the herd animals of choice. And possible
pigs.
I think the Romans had rice, as well.

All of my references mention carbs. Bread has lots of carbs.

I mentioned carbs too. I just made the point that the elites didnt eat
that many. But you snipped the part where I said the Roman Empires plebs
ran on bread and circuses and that wheat and indeed rice from eqypt were
major imports

The only think you links added to that was that legumes and leeks were
also popular.

You said "No carbs at all"

That's silly. Everybody eats carbs. Roman street vendors sold veggie
and meat handpies, the ancient version of fast food.

We had the decimal system before we had zero. It's kind of baked in
to our anatomy. Roman numerals are a base-10 system.

Fireworks are not a great cultural contribution, except that they
gave us cannons.

Sushi is a blip on the radar of history. From carpaccio to xató,
nobody was waiting around for the Japanese to serve them raw fish.

> What did Italians eat before Marco Polo brought pasta from asia and
> someone imported tomatoes from the new world?

The Marco Polo thing is a canard. They had pasta in ancient Greece,
Rome, and the Middle East. Boiling a paste of flour and water is
an obvious move for people who relied on community ovens to bake
bread.

"There is a legend of Marco Polo importing pasta from China which
originated with the Macaroni Journal, published by an association of
food industries with the goal of promoting pasta in the United States."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pasta#History

Surely you know how many pasta sauces there are that do not involve
tomatoes.

The recent version of that is the British Empire. It was a bringer of
civilisation to almost every country it took care of.

It's easy to forget how primitive some of the countries were before
Europeans and in particular the British brought Western civilisation. For
example, when Britain came to sub-Saharan Africa the entire subcontinent
had not discovered the wheel nor made use of writing. Fortunately for
them, several of the wealthiest countries in Africa today are former
British colonies.

A story that is popular in parts of the UK.

> It's easy to forget how primitive some of the countries were before Europeans and in particular the British brought Western civilisation.

Since the relevant bits of the UK aren't all that well in formed about foreign countries, they did like to think that the areas that they invaded and exploited were "primitive".

> For example, when Britain came to sub-Saharan Africa the entire subcontinent had not discovered the wheel nor made use of writing.

Sub-Saharan Africa isn't a continent. The African continent includes Egypt who discovered the wheel and used writing a long time before the UK did.Ethiopia was Christian before the UK was.

> Fortunately for them, several of the wealthiest countries in Africa today are former British colonies.

And who might they be?

https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/richest-african-countries

puts Nigeria first, and it is rich because it has got oil - not something put there by the colonial powers.

Russia doesn't need any rebuilding money - other than very trivially,

Um. Not with weapons, no. But it is under economic embargo, and Putin
has destroyed its economy, and all its young men with any intelligence
have off buggered.

It may well prove pragmatic to rebuild it into a modern state after
Putin goes, just as it was prudent to rebuild Germany after Hitler went.

An exercise we only later came to regret when they took over the EU ...
