Andy from Peru is probably the hardest user of a BMW GS. But the ride
can end suddenly if the Bendix fails:

I am thinking about it. Learning it at 67 and then riding is more risky
but I probably would not ride anything bigger than a 250cc dual-sport.
Zero motorcycle experience so far but I did a lot of road bike and
mountain bike riding on fairly hostile turf. So things such as counter
steering are already programmed into muscle memory. just not at
motorcycle speeds.

One of my main decision points will be whether I can lift a 300lbs bike
after a fall. My lower back is pretty shot so that might not work. Out
here you have to be able to do it alone because there are many trails
where you'll see nobody all day. Except for bears and they aren't going
to volunteer.

Iceland looks like a nice place to ride. Though we have a lot of similar
stuff right here, including hot springs.

Maybe you can go back and fix that 12-cylinder engine :-)
