Solo il PC che gestisce il database; tutti gli altri hanno solo bisogno di vedere quella macchina in rete via TCP/Named pipes e non è nemmeno necessario ci sia alcuna cartella condivisa.
L'interfaccia grafica di gestione (management studio), che è comunque opzionale, puoi installarla a tuo piacimento sulla macchina che ospita il servizio principale come anche su un client qualunque.

Si... io ho ancora in giro su qualche macchina la versione 2008 e funziona tranquillamente anche con S.O. recenti.

Come detto nell'altro thread, l'opzione LocalDB non necessita di servizi installati ma probabilmente non consente accessi condivisi allo stesso file; in ogni caso non ho mai provato una configurazione come questa, quindi potrebbe anche essere vero il contrario.
