Die 48kHz waren bereits vor der CD in Form von digitalen 
(Master-)Bandformaten etabliert.

Die CD war der Abweichler.

Hing wohl irgendwie mit der begrenzten Speicherkapazität zusammen (bei 
48kHz wäre die vom Marketing gewünschte Spieldauer nicht erreicht 
worden) sowie existierenden alternativen Bandformaten, namentlich Sony 
F1, die dann zur Wahl von 44100 als nächst niedrigerem, zu irgendwas 
kompatiblem, Wert führten.

Das gilt allerdings auch für die Umwandlung in komprimierte Formate wie 
AAC. Jeder Kompromiss in den Eingabedaten macht dem Codec zusätzlich zu 
schaffen und führt zu verminderter Qualität.
