| Subject | Terminal command to disable disk swapping in El Capitan |
| Message-ID | <55bb934e$0$2981$2c56edd9@usenetrocket.com> |
Hello all - I'm looking for the terminal command that can be used to turn off VM disk swapping for El Capitan. In the past I've used this one: sudo launchctl unload -wF /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist ... but I'm not sure if that's the correct one. Aside: I don't require a lecture on why I shouldn't do this, it's for experimental purposes only on a drive volume that is not my "main drive"... Thanks...

'cause it's his computer and he can set it up to experiment as he sees fit.

Could be. In other news: http://www.ragingmenace.com/software/menumeters/ Sure hope Apple eventually (soon) support code signing for the likes of Raging Menace et al for programs that need access to deep data.

If you¹d like to try the beta, please download it here: iStat Menus 5.11 beta in other words, whatever issue that menumeters claims to have is not due to apple.

Have to wait for the official (post-beta) release of 10.11 methinks before declaring that. I prefer MenuMeters for the use I make of such.

I don't know that code signing is the issue with monitoring programs including Bjango. Further, Raging Menace don't attribute their issue to SIP specifically. SIP (as I understand it) wants to protect key filespace from unauthorized _writes_. Data about how the system is performing should be available passively as a _read_ (and not necessarily from file space). (IMO).

Meh. This doesn't seem to have prevented Bjango from getting iStat Menus working (and IMO iStat Menus is far better than MenuMeters): "Software developers are now blocked from editing or writing to certain protected files and folders within OS X – or from executing code that tinkers with the system. Marc Edwards, of Bjango software, is one such developer. "We had to make some changes to get iStat Menus working again" he admits. iStat Menus is a popular system-monitoring app for the Mac that until now has relied on accessing system files. Bjango already has a working beta of iStat Menus that plays nice under Apple's new rules, but not all developers will be able to work under El Capitan's restrictions." <http://www.smh.com.au/it-pro/security-it/os-x-el-capitans-new-security-features-make-apples-mac-more-like-ios-20150720-gifyoy.html> -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. They're probably not using MenuCracker, among other things.

Like Alan, I prefer MenuMeters. I don't want tons of info, I
just want to clearly see how the system is handling its work.

Both offer roughly the same menu bar options, only iStat gives you more options and better integration with things like the OS X calendar: <https://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/> iStat just does it better, and with fewer malfunctions, IME. To each, their own, of course. Just stating an opinion. : ) -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. I've never had a "malfunction" with Menu Meters that I'm aware of. It just sits up there telling me the state of the things that concern me (CPU use, memory used and ethernet throughput). I may turn off memory use though. I've got gobs of the stuff and may add another 16 GB. Because. > > To each, their own, of course. Just stating an opinion. : ) Of course.

I've had plenty of issues with MenuMeters - from silly drawing glitches to insuficient or buggy temperature sensor support, along with crashes and other problems - from roughly 2003 through 2006 or so. I finally switched to iStat Menus in frustration and have had a much more pleasant experience. I also find iStat Menus to be much better looking and more fully featured then MenuMeters. iStat Menus is updated way more frequently too. > I may turn off memory use though. Just as another data point: I also have iStat Menus (a friend pointed me at MenuMeters but I never tried itas I didn't like the look of it). I have a rather full menu bar so don't want a lot of status indicators updating all the time, so I went with the "combined" option for iStat Menus, with everything enabled inside it. That gives me a single click target through which I can quickly see the main details in a menu, with submenus for detail. Works for me. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

I finally A decade ago! So sorry! I've been using Menu Meters on several Macs since early 2008 and other than the settings needing to be redone a few times (and that was in the previous decade, not this one) I've had zero issues. > switched to iStat Menus in frustration and have had a much more pleasant > experience. I've found all that to be more distraction than useful of late. On my previous iMac it was marginally useful. On this one pretty useless. A visual of CPU load and ethernet load seem to be the only things worth monitoring. (Actually on the i7QuadC not even CPU, on my SO's new MBA, perhaps). Note I have a widget to occasionally look at the amount of storage left on the 5 physical drives that are always attached - but even then I don't look at that much. When there's less than 100 GB on a drive I'll order a larger one. (I may even have an iStat license but I'm not sure anymore! That would date from ~2008/2009).

MenuMeters doesn't look at temperature sensors.
