MovieSherlock has a Safari plug in that you can install that puts a
Download button over YouTube videos.

Click the D'Load button, and it MovieSherlock opens and downloads the
file - usually before the ad has even finished playing.

Again... it's not a freebie. It's kind of expensive, but my company
paid for it, so it's no skin off my nose. They're nice like that...

I gave it a quick try. The item I looked at wouldn't load in Safari
(happens sometimes) so I didn't properly test the extension.

I looked at the same video in Chrome (because sometimes Flash is the
reason something won't show in Safari). I downloaed the Chrome
extension, but got told that it was disabled because the extension was
not from the Chrome store.

bullshit. youtube doesn't use flash and hasn't for a long time.

I've seen it often. At least the wheel (not pinwheel, I'm not sure how
to describe it) keeps spinning and the wording "if playnack doesn't
begin shortly, try restarting your device". It always seems to work when
I change browser from Safari to Chrome. If anyone knows why this happens
and how to correct the issue, I would be glad. Could be some third-party
item on my machine causing trouble, of course.

OK, I wasn't quite accurate about Flash. For some sites (greeting card
ones, mostly) I do get told Flash is needed, and then I have to move to
Chrome. For YouTube I sometimes get the situation described above, which
- as you say - probably has nothing to do with Flash but still means I
have to switch browsers.

Anyway, my point was that the particular extension (which looks very
useful) does not currently work in Chrome, with a specific error message
as I said.

could be.

what you describe is *not* normal and something is wrong with your
setup.

you could try setting the user agent to ipad to get the mobile version,
and if it still wants flash, don't bother. flash is dead and any site
that hasn't realized that is not worth the effort.

what did the developer say when you asked why?

I didn't ask. Chrome said that it would not install extensions not
obtained through their store.

Maybe it can be obtained through the store, but the direct link
downloads an extension that Chrome does not accept.

why not? they most likely know why it didn't work.

that's a security feature, much like having macos only install apps via
the app store.

i don't use chrome, but there's probably a setting to override it.

Because the reason it did not work was Chrome refusing to allow it to
run, as noted.

Possibly. Downloading videos isn't something I do often, so finding out
about overrriding it isn't a priority, though I will check in due
course.

Works fine here. Thanks, Lewis!

Nah! Any time you see a web page that claims Flash is needed, all you have
to do is change the user agent (in the Safari "Develop" menu) to any iOS
string and the video will "magically" load. There's literally no need to
have Flash installed for the overwhelming majority of videos to play.

Sure. As I said in my other post, the YouTube video sometimes won't
load, but probably the reason has nothing to do with Flash. I'll try
your suggestion, though switching to Chrome seems as easy.

By the way (for the benfit of anyone else reading this thread - I did it
ages ago) I think I am right that the Develop menu has to be activated,
it is not there by default. Or is my memory wrong of having to do this.

That's one of the big reasons for me as well (see my reply).

Sure! A few different reasons:

1. I don't want Google tracking everything I do in a browser. There are
some user interface features in Chrome that let you turn some tracking
features off; but I don't trust Google not to continue tracking you even
with all of them disabled. After all, Google was caught not long ago
bypassing Safari privacy features by installing tracking cookies on
Safari users' computers:

<https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2012/02/google-hit-with-ftc-complaint-says-circumventing-safari-privacy-features-accidental/>

(For that reason I also never use Google to search; instead I use the
most excellent and privacy-preserving DuckDuckGo.com as my search
engine.)

2. It's got Flash baked in, which opens it up to many security holes. To
make matters worse, you have little control over how that Flash code is
updated over time, other than updating Chrome itself.

3. Google Chrome's Mac update facility has a history of hoarding update
installers indefinitely and filling up people's hard drives over time:

<https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.sys.mac.system/bgFgjO4jWLk>

4. There's just no compelling reason for me to use a browser other than
Safari for the vast majority of my browsing needs. The only time I
nother with another browser (which is usually Firefox) is when some
dumb-ass bank website malfunctions (usually due to being badly coded).
On those very rare occasions where a site doesn't work correctly with
Safari, Firefox does the trick just fine, sans tracking and privacy
concerns.

I also don't have Chrome installed;

I have the same reasons as JR, plus a few other issues with Chrome.

For a while I had Chromium installed for the rare occasions where I
needed Flash, but they changed the mechanisms which meant Flash was no
longer baked into Chromium, which made it more trouble than it was
worth. I now have no way to access Flash content on my main computer.

(I do still have Flash Player installed on my Mac Mini "set top box"; it
only gets used for web browsing rarely, such as accessing TV on demand
web sites which still use Flash, and then only for the one local network
which has not released an Apple TV app - bizarre choice because they
have released an iOS app and the competing network has had an Apple TV
app for more than a year.)

My key reason for not having Chrome installed is that Chrome's update
engine runs as a root-level process, which can do updates in the
background without asking me first.

I don't like software installing updates automatically, but my primary
dislike of Chrome's method was that it would also download its updates
in the background, even if I'm not using Chrome regularly.

I'm often using an Internet connection which is metered (tethering via
my iPhone), therefore having Chrome installed risks my data cap being
hit. Until recently I was on a plan which started charging me without
warning if I went over the cap, but a plan change means I now get "warn
at 80%, stop at 100%" rather than automatically billing me for data by
the megabyte.

This was not a problem with Chromium because it has manual updates.

Same for me. Probably 99% Safari, 1% Firefox.

I know Netflix still demands you have Silverlight installed, because I
had an old Mac mini set up just for watching video in a spare bedroom
until I recently replaced it with an Apple TV. Which services still use
Flash?

Yuck. No kidding.

I recall people having problems with the Google updater process as well,
where it would consume lots of CPU in the background, and cause other
performance issues as well.

Sounds about right here too.

Television New Zealand, who run TV One and TV Two here. Not one you're
likely to encounter. Their web interface for on-demand viewing of
recently broadcast programmes still uses Flash, as does the competition
MediaWorks who run TV Three.

Both have iOS apps, and both support the Freeview Plus streaming service
to smart TVs. Only MediaWorks has an Apple TV app. None of these
variants use Flash, only the web sites. They don't have mobile web site
which stream video, so no way to trick the web site into giving
non-Flash versions by pretending to be an iPad.
