admin access is not required for that.

There's really nothing to "play with" when you use the removal method
recommended by the software maker.

Wacom software installs drivers that require administrative access to
install. Do you let just anyone have administrator access to your Macs?
That seems like a *really* bad idea. Why not use the Guest account
feature built into macOS to let strangers have access in a more secure
fashion?

That's not uncommon. I have two Mac minis running Snow Leopard in my
house.

I strictly control what my old Snow Leopard machines do, and I don't
open any services on them to internet traffic due to the many security
holes they have that have since been patched in later operating system
versions.

Anyway it sounds like your supervisor should invest just a little time
in securing your Macs so that unauthorized strangers can't install stuff
on them which requires administrative access.

Do *I* let just anybody have access to *my* Macs?

I don't administer the Macs... otherwise we wouldn't have these problems.
Somebody installed MacKeeper once... That took a day or two to eradicate.

You try explaining to an Offset Manager why we should restrict the Macs
to certain people... I certainly haven't had any luck.

We're a commercial print shop... most people who use the machines are
just using them as tools. They're not computer people, they're
packaging people.

And they apparently didn't learn from that experience. Goofy.

There's no need to restrict them to certain people. All employees can
have standard (non-admin) accounts that wouldn't allow them to install
stuff and make system changes, but only a select few should have
*administrative* access.

And that's *precisely* why they should not have administrative access.

you definitely have a problem in that shop.

the fact that people can install malware that takes a day or two to fix
isn't enough?

those who are not computer people should *not* have admin access.

it's nothing you'd see, so no.

whatever supposed slow downs and restart problems you might have had
were *not* due to not deleting plist files from apps.

wacom installs a driver for it's tablet. with very rare exception, apps
do not do that.

wacom has its own uninstaller, which is the correct way to uninstall
the wacom driver, not by using some third party app that guesses as to
what might be relevant.

that old crap was the wacom driver, which should not have mattered even
if you didn't have an attached tablet.

We're talking about *Windows* here. There's little need to delete
preference files after deleting a *Mac* application, since they are
relatively small and innocuous.

Yeah... Windows is another animal. I wouldn't even guess what happens there.

Re: Macs. It isn't pref files that appeared to be a problem. It was
the Application Support files and the daemons the app installs that add
up.

AppDelete is a quick drag 'n' drop method to get rid of associated
files. No need to hunt them down manually and figure out what goes
with what.

The startup daemon for that Wacom tablet driver was likely the sole
issue since in general stuff that is in Application Support isn't
actively running. And you are right: left over preferences files aren't
a problem.

Meh. Using the removal procedure recommended by the software maker
avoids such issues without needed an additional piece of software to
mind the store.

Yeah... about that. You have to know it's installed first.

We don't even have a Wacom tablet in the shop... so it had to be
installed on the sly.

That means your real problem is that you are allowing just anyone to
have administrative access to those computers.

What is confusing me is, why the Wacom driver should be an issue at
all. I have been using Wacom tablets for years including the one I am
currently using without issue. Along with the Wacom driver there is the
Wacom Control Panel installed with the OS System Preferences and Admin
privileges are required to make that installation. Most importantly it
isn't behaving like malware, it functions as advertised.

the wacom driver shouldn't be a problem at all, whether or not there's
an attached tablet.

the real problem is that an unauthorized person had admin access and
could have installed *other* stuff...

Personally, I created my own user account, and I keep my stuff separate
from the main account.

that doesn't matter if other people have admin access to the machine.

Whoever is in charge at that shop is going to be in for a rude and
expensive shock one day.

I could certainly see how any piece of software might malfunction if
only part of the software was removed from the system.

Yeah, well, if they were MINE, it wouldn't be happening... but I'm not
there 24 hours a day.

no need to be there 24 hours a day.

What? How would I know what happens in the 16 hours I'm not there, then?

Fact of the matter is we run 3 shifts... and anything can happen on a
single shift that nobody on the other two shifts will know about.

Not to mention that the machines need to be left on, and running in
order to make changes on press.
They can't be secured from other departments because they need to run
the equipment the computers control.

At almost a thousand dollars an hour press time, the machine that burns
our printing plates has to be accessible 24/7.
