FDR was arguably the last Democratic President with a really strong rural base; subsequent Democratic presidents seem to have paid less and less attention. Congress still has to pay attention because of having to pass new versions of the Farm Bill. The interesting thing about the rise of Republicans in rural areas is that it is the triumph of social values over economics. If rural Americans were voting for their economic interests, they'd be voting Democrat. One example: the Republican anti-NAFTA fever is also anti- rural America. Under NAFTA, US agricultural exports to Canada and Mexico rose from $9 billion to $39 billion- better than 4x more- compared to the broader increase of about 80%. American farmers stand to lose their asses if Trump pulls the US out of NAFTA (the farmers in my family just started to figure this out in the past two weeks and are now very worried).

It is pretty clear that the pressure to reflect the votes in each state is far greater than pressure to ensure only qualified people are named president. So if the electoral college cannot play a "sanity assurance" role to weed out unqualified presidents, then it isn't needed. There is however a simple reform that can fix this: do like Maine where there is no "winner takes all" at state level. So if there is 40/60 split,in votes, then there is a 40/60 split in electoral college voters from that state. As I recall, this is a state level decision so changing this woudl not require change to constitution.

It is not "pressure" on US electors that causes them to vote for the candidate that got the most votes in their state. It is the fact that the electors are long-time, loyal members of their party. Each party nominates a slate of electors, and the electors for the party that wins the popular vote in the state vote in the electoral college election (on Dec 19 last year). In 27 states, electors must vote for the candidate getting the most votes. Seven electors on Dec 19 cast a vote for someone other than the popular vote winner in their state (or district in Maine and Nebraska). <http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/06/what-is-the-electoral-college_ n_2078970.html> > > So if the electoral college cannot play a "sanity assurance" role to > weed out unqualified presidents, then it isn't needed. > > There is however a simple reform that can fix this: do like Maine where > there is no "winner takes all" at state level. What bothers me is the effects of gerrymandering on both state and federal representation as well as the Electoral College. That's what needs to be fixed. We have at times had some astonshingly shaped districts here in Minnesota, clearly designed to give a specific set of people their own representative (e.g., most recently Michele Bachman, whom I am surprised was not appointed to some job in the Trump administration given her staggering nuttiness). I think it would be much better to have balanced districts that are not safe for either party- making whomever is in office actually have to do their jobs in order to keep them.

I think too many peoole didn't think Trump would be elected so they voted against Hillary, not realising what they were voting for might actually happen. Mencken said plenty on the subject, but his major target was Warren Harding and idiots in general. "On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron." "The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary. "Whenever you hear a man speak of his love for his country, it is a sign that he expects to be paid for it." "Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard." "Democracy is a pathetic belief in the collective wisdom of individual ignorance." "Democracy, in fact, is always inventing class distinctions, despite its theoretical abhorrence of them." "The meaning of religious freedom, I fear, is sometimes greatly misapprehended. It is taken to be a sort of immunity, not merely from governmental control but also from public opinion. A dunderhead gets himself a long-tailed coat, rises behind the sacred desk, and emits such bilge as would gag a Hottentot. Is it to pass unchallenged? If so, then what we have is not religious freedom at all, but the most intolerable and outrageous variety of religious despotism. Any fool, once he is admitted to holy orders, becomes infallible. Any half-wit, by the simple device of ascribing his delusions to revelation, takes on an authority that is denied to all the rest of us. ..." "No one in this world, so far as I know—and I have researched the records for years, and employed agents to help me—has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby." "In this world of sin and sorrow there is always something to be thankful for; as for me, I rejoice that I am not a Republican." -- Regards, Savageduck

Thank you for the excellent selection. I was only alluding to one of
those, but his comments are generally apropos.
