#98561 — Opening a file that's inside a package

SubjectOpening a file that's inside a package
Message-ID<isw-C2C6DD.11281712012017@news-roam.garlic.com>
I know about "Show Package Contents", but what I want to do is, within
an "Open-Save" dialog, navigate directly to a file that's inside a
package.

How?

Some applications allow you to view contents of packages and invisible
files (TextWrangler's dialogs are a good example), and others don't. For
the ones that don't, there's a simple work-around solution: If you view
any folder within the package in a Finder window, you can drag items
from the Finder window into the open/save dialog box listing area to go
there.

I neglected to mention: You can use the Command-Shift-Period shortcut in
open/save dialogs to display hidden files and folders; but doing so won't
allow you to dig into packages if the application owning the dialog doesn't
allow it.

Wow, how long has that Finder trick been there? I've only ever heard of
using Terminal to do that.

I've used it in 10.6 - not sure about earlier versions as my memory is
fuzzy going that far back.

Wow. I hate these mysterious things! I always go to terminal when
looking for hidden files.

Another hidden one is for named pipes. Can't see those in Finder at all
even with the above. ( I tried CMD-SHIFT-| but that doesn't do
anything). I've been using named pipes a lot of late between various
program modules.

I almost always do what I need with hidden files in a terminal window on
the command line. On the rare occasions I do access them through a GUI
app it's typically an app like TextWrangler or some other app that lets
you easily access hidden files in its open/save dialog boxes. I haven't
actually used the Command-Shift-Period shortcut in ages.

If you were familiar with Norton Commander back in MS-DOS days, you
might like Midnight Commander. It's a console file manager (actually, a
port from Linux). It's usually faster to get where you want using shell
with good autocompletion, but sometimes two panels are useful, and in
Midnight Commander you can use both methods.

Thanks, but I've never wanted such a thing. In fact, my most memorable
experiences with Midnight Commander are the times I accidentally typed 'mc'
rather than 'mv' while trying to move a file and ending up having to exit
Midnight Commander instead - a bit of a nuisance, really, enough that I
enjoy systems without it installed just a tad more. ; )

I like to think I'm well versed in these tricks but this is one I've
completely missed. I've been firing up Terminal to get Finder to show
hidden files for 15 years.

Funny how these things are completely undocumented and people just have
to stumble across them by accident. It's hard to call these things
anything but easter eggs.

Yup. That is a shame, but if you keep up with Mac news you tend to see
most of them as they come to light in the community. I'm sure that's
where I learned about it originally.

+1

I remember reading a blog post showing that you have to run defaults write
something&& killall Finder from the command line to show dotfiles in Finder
and somehow I assumed there’s no easier easier way. Thanks!

Hmm... A long time.

Not sure if it was all the way back to 10.0PB, but it's been there
seemingly forever.

I nearly never use it though...

Does that include the Finder app itself, and not just open/save dialogs?
Because the key chord now works in Finder too. This seems to be a new
Sierra feature.

Yes.

Command-Shift-G in the Finder has been there since forever.

No. Command-Shift-Period does not work in Finder windows - at least up to
El Capitan.

But Command-Shift-Period in Finder windows hasn't.

There wasn't enough context quoted, so I was left responding to the
subject.

Excellent. I was hoping for something like "hold down ctl-alt-meta and
it'll open the package", but this works nicely.

What I have is an SQLite database in a "wrapper" (why, I don't know;
maybe to keep folks from poking around in it), and an open source SQLite
browser. The Browser doesn't support the "drag the file into the window"
model for opening, and I got tired of opening the wrapper and dragging
the actual database file to the desktop so the "Open" dialog would see
it.

Your method is much simpler. Thanks.

Maybe just make an alias of the database-file, put it whereever you want
and open that from the browser.

Tried that; the SQLite browser wouldn't do it.
