Deja Vu PowerPC.

I'd lean more to the fact that Apple have invested by buying three
companies (or more) who are CPU design experts. Controlling one's
destiny with CPU design you own and not paying intel's margins is a much
more useful thing than not waiting on intel.

The next "delay" fence that Apple would face would be the fabs. It's
all nice and dandy to spec to the tightest of the tight - the fabs being
able to deliver is another thing altogether. That would be the next
line of frustration for Apple. I doubt they want to be in the fab
business at all - that is capital intensive and obsoletes quickly.

OS X / MacOS is processor agnostic and has been so for over a decade.
When the Mac goes to ARM it will still be Mac OS.

Apple don't announce until a product is committed to production. Often
not until it's ready for sale.

MacOS on ARM will not be iOS.

But the distinction will get blurrier over the long term.

Apple doesn't innovate often. When it does, everyone else follows and
imitates.

They know when to shut up, enjoy the share buybacks and dividends and
stock value growth.

right and that is what one would expect from a single code base

and that leads to the conclusion that one would not need two pieces
of hardware that run the same code

one code base one piece of hardware add a display and kb and voila
you have a laptop or imac

Yep, just hope I get compiler support quickly for fpc. It generates ARM
code but will need the infamous "Command line tools" for linking to make
exec's.

Yep. Apple used legal methods to reduce their taxes like any other
multinational corporation.

the same as what individuals do on their personal tax returns.

and apple wasn't the only company to do so either. google, microsoft,
facebook and many others do the same thing, using the same or similar
methods.

You don't need a single hardware for a single operating system. Unix no longer
runs on its original hardware, except maybe a museum still running a PDP-11, and
has run on many different CPUs since then.

The differences in hardware and kernels have to do with incompatiable
constraints: iPhones have to run a long time on a battery charge and run an
interface solely through a touch screen. MacOSX products have to run fast and
can expect a variety of inputs, especially keyboard and mouse, and can use more
power, either plugged into the grid or carrying a heavier and larger battery.

Unless/until ARM performance matches Intel performance while not making battery
life worse for laptops, Apple doesn't have market for all ARM devices.

> or will laptops and imacs go away and you will just plug you iphone
> into a keyboard and display

If they can deal with battery issues, an alternative strategy is bunch
cooperating devices communicating with Bluetooth. So maybe the central component
is a massive SSD which houses your computer's soul. Maybe housed in an iPhone
for a minimal interface. Place a keyboard or mouse in its vicinity to add those
as inputs. Have a flatscreen nearby and your can move your interface to that.
Additional disk volumes are separate devices in the vicinity. Buy a dektacpu box
and sit next to it to farm compute intensive processes there. You can walk
around with your computer's soul always with you, and use the other components
as you need and are willing to deal with the weight.

concurrent processors that are more specific like that new touch bar
may give performance parity and lower power

sounds clunky and if you have a flat screen you have power so no battery
issue

but a modular approach is what is needed

the iphone when you go out locally
maybe a processor and gpu augmentation unit when you travel globally
that attaches somehow to the iphone through the applecore*
along with a fold up color eink display or a projector

when you are home do what ever you want
connect multiple augmentation units together to add cpu and gpu
