| Message-ID | <2016093010092482151-xxx@yyyzzz> |
I attempt to do streaming of one kind or other in Safari, for instance this one: http://abcnews.go.com/Live?stream=7&cid=HP_LB_THUMB And get a complaint that I must have Flash Player version 10.2.0 or greater. I currently have 23.0.0.162 installed. When I pop the same url into Firefox there is complaint. Any ideas on how to correct this?

From the Safari menu bar, choose Develop > User Agent > Safari — iOS — iPad, and like magic the videos will play. (If you don't see the Develop menu, go to Safari Preferences > Advanced and enable "Show Develop menu in the menu bar" first.) Some web sites stupidly assume that if you are browsing on a desktop operating system like macOS, Linux, or Windows, you can run Flash and blindly serve up Flash-based content. Yet those same web sites will happily serve up HTML5 video content instead if they detect you are browsing from a mobile operating system, since Flash doesn't run on most mobile devices. You can blame the person who authored the web site for this, since there's technically no reason they can't just use HTML5 in all cases. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. He said he was on abcnews, and that is one of the sites which refuses to work without Flash. I stopped going there about 10 years ago. Just checked on my MBP, and yep, videos will not load. Though I don't get any sort of warning. They're doing something sneaky and super shitty, since the videos do play on the iPad. -- 'People need vampires,' she [Granny] said. Regardless of who goes there and why, making the modification I made as per Roger's suggestions, addressed my issue. I didn't say it "refuses to work with Flash". It worked fine with Firefox, but not with Safari, and I don't know why, and at this point don't care. The "Still wouldn't play" from above is not from me.

In fact, most Mac users > don't use Safari. And most Mac users use Windows over whatever the current > POS Apple OS. Three delusional statements in three sentences. Congratulations! The funniest one, of course, is claiming most Mac users use Windows. As if. Firefox was a good browser many years ago. It' been an overblown pile of shitcode for more than 40 versions. Safari, Chrome, Opera, and even IE11 and Edge are all better, though Chrome is a terrible choice on a laptop because it is such a resource pig. I used to use Firefox with some useful plugins for web development, but then Safari got excellent and there was Chrome and no need to deal with Firefox any more. -- Let the Wookiee win.

That's incorrect. The URL in the first post of this thread does indeed play videos in Safari with an iOS user agent string. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. Not on my 10.12 laptop it doesn't. I tried quite a few and no go. -- S is for SUSAN who perished of fits T is for TITUS who flew into bits

I tried quite a few and no go. With the URL in the OP? Try it with Safari extensions disabled. Some (like ClickToFlash and ClickToPlugin can interfere with normal operation). -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. I went to abcnews.go.com and set my UA to iPad iOS 10 clicked on videos and then tried to play several. I could get the preview to load with the bit play button in the middle, but clicking that caused the video area to go black. Ah. uBlock was blocking the pre-roll ad. That explains it. Never mind. <reënabling uBlock> -- May you live in interesting times

Came from Youtube, but I was unable to get past Facebook's usurpation of (apparent) ownership to figure out the URI. I've actually encountered very few videos I couldn't run; most of them Facebook hijackings. Sorry, I meant "shared" :-) I have an extension that automatically figures out if HTML5 is available and fetches it.
