#87294 — java update for safari

Subjectjava update for safari

I got alert that my java is out of date, so I downloaded and installed it. Safari still did not recognize this java, even after rebooting. The same happens with chrome and firefox.

I then looked for where java is installed, so I can uninstall what is there, but I could not find it.

Any advice welcome.

More details are needed. What application told you it was out of date? A
screen shot or verbatim message would be helpful.

From where did you download it? A link to the web page would help.

What error message (again, verbatim please) are you seeing in Safari /
Firefox?

System Preferences > Java > Java Control Panel > Java tab will show you
where it is installed. Removing it is not for the faint of heart, and
typically is not necessary anyway.

To be sure I'm not installing a trojan pretending to be an update for
Java or Flash Player, I decline alerts and go to the bottom row of
System Preferences.

I just did that to see if my Java was up do date. It wasn't. When I
updated, Oracle wanted to change my home page and my default search
engine to Yahoo. No thanks.

If I were uneasy about something I'd installed, I'd run malwarebytes.
It's free.
