More details are needed. What application told you it was out of date? A

What error message (again, verbatim please) are you seeing in Safari /
Firefox?

System Preferences > Java > Java Control Panel > Java tab will show you
where it is installed. Removing it is not for the faint of heart, and
typically is not necessary anyway.
