#87273 — Trouble with OS 10.11.3 update

SubjectTrouble with OS 10.11.3 update
Message-ID<n7mog2$e95$1@reader1.panix.com>
Running 10.11.2 on a MacBook Pro. I tried to update to 10.11.3, and when it
rebooted, it said the update couldn't be verified and to try again. After
multiple retries, I get the same report, and stay at 10.11.2.

Is there be something I can delete to force a completely clean reload. Or
maybe there is a problem at the App Store end? Any suggstions?

Have you tried restarting the computer?

If restarting doesn't do the trick, try manually downloading the
installing the combo update from Apple's web site:

Was this updating through App Store or with one of the downloadable
updaters? Using the delta updater, I had the same hang during restart
that was reported on TidBITS.

<http://tidbits.com/article/16205>

Everything seems all right with 10.11.3, but the experience does tend to
reinforce the story that Apple has gotten sloppy with their software.

Aw, my progress bar always seems to hang! I measure it in millimeters,
then measure again ten minutes later. If there's no change, I wait and
try again.

The user interface for this update was especially bad. Notifications
said I had two updates. If I don't know what will be updated, I don't
know the impact on what I'm doing. So I went to App Store. It said
they were for a jigsaw puzzle app and iMovie. I clicked Update.

A box appeared saying updating would require restarting. I didn't want
to risk being pushed into restarting until I saw if I needed to finish
anything up first. I declined and quit App Store.

I closed my apps and relaunched App Store. Without asking me, it started
downloading three updates. The third was 10.11.3, and it had two
progress bars! App Store was pulling four streams on my limited
bandwidth, meaning a long wait. Both 10.11.3 streams said n/a regarding
the size of the download and how much had been downloaded. I clicked
Pause on one.

If I'm going to do a system update, I'd rather choose a time when I can
spare the bandwidth for the download. I'd want a time when I can be
without the computer for an hour or longer. I'd want everything backed
up, right to the minute.

The download gave me time to back up. Then an update was evident; I
think the screen went black for a couple of minutes. When my desktop
came back, a box saying restart appeared very briefly. If I'd looked
away for an instant, I would have missed it.

Everything looked and acted normal, as if the update process had been
very quick. I restarted because About This Mac said I was still at
10.11.2. For 21 minutes, I didn't know how long it would take. Then it
said 11 minutes more. It finished in 9. I'd never before beaten an
estimate.

I saw a similar confusing mess with App Store. I think the iMovie update
might require the 10.11.3 update as a prerequisite. But who knows? I'm
beginning to think that App Store is made by the same people who make
iTunes. Oh wait . . ..

Whenever possible, I use standalone updaters. That gives me more control
over what gets installed and when, and it allows for a faster,
non-network update should I need to reinstall something.

General experience is that the combo system updaters are more reliable
than the deltas or the App Store.

apple does, which is why the app store will clearly state what the
prerequisite is.

not only that, but if an update requires a later version of os x than
what you're running, it won't be offered at all. instead, it will show
up under incompatible updates:

That page shows the latest offerings. To find other Apple software,
click on the "Browse by Product" button and then use the Search field or
click on one of the category icons at the top of the page.

Now I know what you meant! So when Notifications says I need updates, I
check App Store to see what they are. Then if it's a system update, I
quit App Store and go to Apple support.

I think that's what I'll do next time I need a system update. Of course,
this time, the system update was downloading before I knew about it.

Like I said earlier:

<https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1859>

Best to look for the "combo" updaters, since they contain all point
updates since the initial release (10.11.0, for instance).

As an old habit I use the OS X combo update and update iOS via iTunes
which AFAIK does a combo-like non-incremental install.

I always first install OS X updates to a test partition (I have two
Carbon Copy Cloner backups on other partitions as well).

And I usually install iOS updates to some non-critical device first.

I had the same problem, updating from the App Store. Fortunately it only
happened once, the second time all went well.
