Yes it is. During the negotiations Apple refused to give things to
Google in exchange for Google Maps (incl. turn by turn). Lose-Lose
situation. I'm not saying Google had the high ground, but Apple
certainly didn't give where they could have (Google wanted branding and
to integrate Latitude into the end solution and Apple refused that).

Facts? Cites? Anything other than making shit up?

And Apple is never going to allow a third party direct access to the
user. Never. That access has to come exclusively from the user
initiating the contact.

This is right.

It would be a pretty good bet that the gods of a world like this
probably do not play chess and indeed this is the case. In fact no gods
anywhere play chess. They haven't got the imagination. Gods prefer
simple, vicious games, where you Do Not Achieve Transcendence but Go
Straight To Oblivion; a key to the understanding of all religions is
that a god's idea of amusement is Snakes and Ladders with greased rungs.

Seek and ye shall find. While the word for word is not available, the
gist of the contending points is quite easy to find on the web.

Liar.

Guess what ? It still does because that is what people use because Apple
Maps, while cute, is not reliable as a mapping product.

google's terms of use were public, and turn by turn directions was not
an option.

apple has enough clout to negotiate their own terms, but google could
have played hardball because they knew apple would have to scramble to
do their own map back end.

so while nobody knows what went on during the discussions between apple
and google, everyone knows what was ultimately decided.

It was the immovable object and the irresistible force meeting. Plenty
of blame on both sides, IMO. But Apple have paid the higher price by
striking out alone. They can afford it. Strategically a very good move
for Apple - tactically hasn't panned out all that great.

Nobody on Android is using Apple Maps. I certainly don't use it all
that much. And outside the US and some other cities, if one wants to
know what bus to take, Apple Maps is useless.

It's not useless for those of us fortunate enough to live in the US. You

My friends in Europe don't complain about it any more than people here.
Sure, there are inaccuracies. As there are in ALL the programs.

For example, the other day Google told me that a flight which was three
hours late had landed at its destination 5 minutes early. It was not
until three hours later, a good 15 minutes after the flight landed, that
they figured out the flight was late.

So, I wasted three hours at the airport.

On the other hand, a family member was in Guadalajara and el DF this
summer and used Apple maps for directions. The only issues she had were
forgetting to put in the city/town names since every neighborhood will
have its own 16 September Street that has no relation to the same
street name 6 blocks over. That's not a failing of Apple Maps.

Even the 3D maps worked great in Guadalajara (and I assume el DF but
she mentioned Guadalajara specifically).

transit directions is definitely a weak point but where they do offer
it, it's well done. it even tells you which side of the subway station
to exit so that you end up closer to your final destination.

Nonsense. I use Apple Maps and haven't had to run Google Maps more than
3 times this year.

We know for a FACT (you may need to look that word up) that Google did
not allow turn-by-turn directions in iOS.

We know for a FACT (you may need to look that word up) that Apple had
turn-by-turn directions from the beginning with their mapping app.

We know for a FACT (you may need to look that word up) that Google added
turn-by=turn directions to their app quite a while after Apple dumped
Google maps.

Most iOS users use Apple Maps.

We only know for a FACT that the existing Google Maps application did
not provide turn by turn.

We know for a FACT that instead of striking a deal with Google to make
it happen, Apple decided to build its own app and mapping database.

We have no factual information on what really happened during
negotiations between Apple and Google about maps.

On what basis do you proclaim that ?

I can just as easily state that most IOS users have moved the Apple Maps
app to the "useless" folder on the very last page where most Apple users
put those apps we're not allowed to delete.

both statement have the same value ( = 0)

true, but it's not hard to figure out what happened.

because it's already installed and the default app for map urls.

for a user to use google maps, they need to download a separate app and
then explicitly run it. some do, but most do not.

except that's not based in reality.

JF Mezei is almost always vastly misinformed, and seemingly refuses
to do his own research for topics he posts about in Apple news groups.
