Yes it is. During the negotiations Apple refused to give things to Google in exchange for Google Maps (incl. turn by turn). Lose-Lose situation. I'm not saying Google had the high ground, but Apple certainly didn't give where they could have (Google wanted branding and to integrate Latitude into the end solution and Apple refused that).

And Apple is never going to allow a third party direct access to the user. Never. That access has to come exclusively from the user initiating the contact. This is right. -- It would be a pretty good bet that the gods of a world like this probably do not play chess and indeed this is the case. In fact no gods anywhere play chess. They haven't got the imagination. Gods prefer simple, vicious games, where you Do Not Achieve Transcendence but Go Straight To Oblivion; a key to the understanding of all religions is that a god's idea of amusement is Snakes and Ladders with greased rungs.

It was the immovable object and the irresistible force meeting. Plenty of blame on both sides, IMO. But Apple have paid the higher price by striking out alone. They can afford it. Strategically a very good move for Apple - tactically hasn't panned out all that great. >>> plus, google was collecting vast amounts of customer data about how and >>> where iphones and ipads were being used. >> >> Guess what ? Nobody on Android is using Apple Maps. I certainly don't use it all that much. And outside the US and some other cities, if one wants to know what bus to take, Apple Maps is useless.

For example, the other day Google told me that a flight which was three hours late had landed at its destination 5 minutes early. It was not until three hours later, a good 15 minutes after the flight landed, that they figured out the flight was late. So, I wasted three hours at the airport. On the other hand, a family member was in Guadalajara and el DF this summer and used Apple maps for directions. The only issues she had were forgetting to put in the city/town names since every neighborhood will have its own 16 September Street that has no relation to the same street name 6 blocks over. That's not a failing of Apple Maps. Even the 3D maps worked great in Guadalajara (and I assume el DF but she mentioned Guadalajara specifically). -- "I've seen Mary Poppins over 500 times. Nobody really knows what really went on. We know for a FACT (you may need to look that word up) that Google did not allow turn-by-turn directions in iOS. We know for a FACT (you may need to look that word up) that Apple had turn-by-turn directions from the beginning with their mapping app. We know for a FACT (you may need to look that word up) that Google added turn-by=turn directions to their app quite a while after Apple dumped Google maps. > Guess what ? We only know for a FACT that the existing Google Maps application did not provide turn by turn. We know for a FACT that instead of striking a deal with Google to make it happen, Apple decided to build its own app and mapping database. We have no factual information on what really happened during negotiations between Apple and Google about maps. > Most iOS users use Apple Maps. On what basis do you proclaim that ? I can just as easily state that most IOS users have moved the Apple Maps app to the "useless" folder on the very last page where most Apple users put those apps we're not allowed to delete. both statement have the same value ( = 0)
