Dear friends:

Yesterday I tried to install El Capitan, and it was (and it is up to now) a
disaster.

Previously, I did a Time Machine backup, and also I generated a pendrive
with the El Capitan Installer.

I started the upgrade process from the Applications folder, the machine did
the first reboot, the white Apple icon appeared, the horizontal thermometer
started to work announcing me that 30 minutes were needed to finish this
stage, and when only seven minutes were missing, the thermometer stopped to
advance. I waited for seven hours, nothing happened, and after that period
of time, I powered off the machine.

After some minutes, I powered on it again, a boot process started, the
thermometer appeared again, and it showed the same position as before. I
waited for another two hours and nothing happened again, so I needed to
power off the machine.

The situation now is that when I try to start the machine, it tries to
continue the failed install process, so I cannot go back or see my data
there.

What can I do? Should I try to update the Operating System booting from the
pendrive? Is this a safer methodology to be preferred to update Mac OSX?

Of course, although I have an up to date Time Machine Backup, I want to
preserve the info stored on the hard drive.

The computer is a 15" MacBook Pro, late 2013, with 16GB memory and 1TB
memory disk, with the last version of Yosemite installed, and before this
mess, working without any problem.

Thanks a lot again.

I've heard of one or two people having this type of issue.

If it were me, I would boot from the USB stick, use Disk Utility to erase
the drive, install El Capitan fresh, and when prompted migrate the data
from the backup disk. Clean and simple.

Otherwise, you could try booting into Safe Mode, and installing from there,
which may or may not get around the issue.

I think that I will do what you say.

I also tried to boot from the USB stick and upgrade to El Capitan from
there, but with the same result. Resetting the NVRAM and the SMC didn't
improve the situation.

Yep, I'd do an erase, clean install, and migration in your situation.
Good luck - I'm sure everything will be fine though. : )

Is there anything "different" about your configuration ?

If you boot with the command key pressed to display choice of boot
drives, does it show the restore partition as bootable ? If so, boot
from it, and then take a peek at your system disk. Is the "Applications"
folder populated with your own applications or only the default apple
apps ?

Booting from the restore partition allows you to run disk utility to
verify/repair your system drive just in case there could be something
wrong with the file system.

(installation copies your existing system to a "Previouew System"
folder. Then it creates new system folders from scratch, popul;ates them
with new software, and then at a later stage, copies items in the
"Previous System" that are "legal" and not in the standard system (whose
files are already there).

Eventually though, I would recommend you restore from Time Machine, go
back to Yosemite (or whatever you had) and wait for next update to El
Capitan.

If you wish to help the poor non-profit Apple, you can report the
problem, and Apple may reply with instructions on how to log the
installation and send them the logs.

Obvious troll. No surprise coming from you, though.

He also got everything important wrong about booting to the boot
selector and/or recovery partition.

So you deny being able to run disk utility when booting from recovery
partition ?

You're an idiot and you gave wrong information just in the 1/2 second I
skimmed your post before realizing it was you and moving on.

1) you do not hold down Command to get a boot menu
2) the Boot menu will not show the recovery partition

So yeah, you got everything wrong.

So pray tell, if the boot menu where you select the boot partition to

Lewis wrong here, or else he's talking about a different boot screen. I
mess around with various OS Xs, and I use the Opt-key boot screen a lot,
and I _always_ see whatever "Recovery Partitions" are available to me.
Unless it's changed for El Colonel.

The recovery partition is not shown on the option boot menu on my 2012
iMac, my 2012 Mac mini, my 2010 Min, my 2015 MBP, or my 2013 MBP. The
minis are running 10.10, the rest running 10.10.

I haven't checked the 2009 iMac.

Sorry, I was wrong, the 2010 mini DOES show the recovery partition on
option boot.

It appears this changed in the firmware in 2012.

Command-R will boot recovery
Command-Option-R will boot Internet Recovery

Macs using Core Storage don't show the recovery partition on that
screen.

That includes every Mac with a Fusion drive, every Mac using FileVault
2, and an increasing number of (but not all) Macs running Yosemite or
later.

The consistent method to get to the recovery partition is to hold down
Command-R at startup.

Does interpretation of keys pressed at boot get done by EFI ? or does it
actually try to boot the "native" boot drive and the nascent OS-X then
looks at the keyboard and then takes action depending on if a kety is
pressed ?

If EFI sees 2 separate disk drives, shouldn't it scan for a bootable
partition on each and see a recovery partion if it is on second drive
instead of first one ?

I understand that once OS-X boots and mounts its own disk drivers, it
will remount the "fusion" drive as a bound volume set that contains the
2 disks, but shouldn't both devices remain visible ?

or does EFI have enough "humph" in it on tne newer Macs to handle bound
volumes and only sees the bound SSD/spinning-disk as one drive ?

I did it. I booted from the USB stick, used Disk Utility to erase the
drive, installed El Capitan fresh, and when prompted migrate data from the
backup disk, I did it. After 20 hours, the computer started to work very
well with the new operating system.

Problem solved? Not at all!!!

I did the normal shutdown at the end of the day, but the computer was
unable to start anymore. When I pressed the power button, the "gong"
sounded, the Apple sign appeared, the empty thermometer appeared too, but
nothing happened for hours and hours.

Again a complete disaster!!!

So, I was really bored of this situation. I booted to the USB stick again,
used the Disk Utility to erase the drive, and without trying to install
anything, I restored the Time Machine backup I had taken just before to try
to install El Capitan.

And the computer is happily using Yosemite again. I have restarted it a
couple of times without any problem.

Very interesting. It probably would have been somewhat enlightening to
boot it up in verbose mode to see where the stall is happening.

Was the startup volume FileVault encrypted?

I've been holding off upgrading to El Capitan at home.

Very odd. I've installed 10.11 on about 20 machines so far and only one
had any trouble at all (my own 2012-ish MBP) which got stuck at about
90% of the install progress.

A reboot fixed that.
