In my MAS Updates there is a 10.11.1 beat update to download.

In my MAS Purchased is the GM which I am now running.

I can't find a date on the beta update. The GM is dated August 12.

What might you do?

A minor amount of research on the web would reveal commentary that Apple
released the first public beta of OS X 10.11.1 today, after having
released the first developer beta last week.

> What might you do?

You can choose whether to stay on the GM of 10.11(.0), or install the
first beta of 10.11.1.

The only new feature I've seen mentioned in public reports of 10.11.1 is
more Unicode characters, including a bunch of new emoji.

I'm sure there are other changes in there, such as bug fixes Apple
wasn't able to include in the 10.11 GM due to the timing of when it
needed to be frozen prior to release.

We know that 10.11 will be released in just over a week, on September 30
(US time). 10.11.1 will probably follow a few weeks later, and could get
more developer/public beta updates in the meantime.

I certainly did "a minor amount of research" none of which addressed
what I suppose I could have done better to relate. I was wondering,
since one was labeled "GM" and was placed in the "Purchased section"
and the new is still in the "Update section" and still labeled as
"beta", if there was some functional difference between the two, as if
they might in fact be two "forks", for whatever idiotic reason Apple
might have had.

That is, I would have expected any update to the GM to show as "GM update."

As has been explained to you already, the GM is delivered the same way
that the release version will be delivered.

Semantics I suppose. But to my mind "same way" implies the GM update
would indeed be labeled "GM update".

The notion of it being GM is obfuscated to the public.

It's simply 10.11 (15A282b) to them (well "us" since I don't Beta).

(A "c" version was released then pulled, apparently - so who knows if
there will be another smaller letter update before Sept. 30.)

Now *that's* funny. I wish I hadn't bothered to wonder.

"GM" would be "Gold Master", the final version that is used to
duplicate to all the CDs / DVDs ... but since Apple no longer sells
disc versions of Mac OS X, there technically isn't a "GM" version any
more.

These days there is only the "alpha" (not usually seen outside Apple),
"beta" (were only available to developers, but Apple has opened them up
to the public), and the final x.0 release. These are followed by
Updates and Patches which go through the same process (alpha -> beta ->
release).

No; 10.11 will be available from the App store as a new install, not as
an update; therefore, the GM is available from the App store as a new
install.

As stated originally, I do in fact have the GM and it does show in my
Purchased apps, just like other apps purchased. And just as with
updates to other purchased apps whose updates are then shown, by their
name, in the Updates section, I expected the GM's update to show there
and for it to be named as the purchased apps (i.e. GM). Silly me.

They are different minor versions of the OS, so there certainly is a
functional difference. As I mentioned, 10.11.1 will have Unicode
changes. Those changes will not be in 10.11.

> That is, I would have expected any update to the GM to show as "GM update."

10.11.1 beta 1 is not an update of the 10.11 GM. It is the first beta of
the next minor version after 10.11.

You already have the 10.11 GM installed, so as far as your computer is
concerned you are running 10.11.

Because you are in the public beta programme, you are being offered new
public betas as they become available. That is why you are seeing
10.11.1 as an update.

If Apple does release a revised 10.11 GM, or the public release of 10.11
is newer than the first 10.11 GM candidate, then you won't be offered
that as an update, because the 10.11.1 beta is a newer version.

If you want to install an updated GM or the final release of 10.11, you
will need to download the full installer again.

If you were to drop your computer out of the public beta programme and
did NOT install the 10.11.1 beta, then your computer would probably be
offered an update to 10.11 final when it is released (September 30).

As long as it is in the public beta program, your computer will be
offered updates to the latest available public beta. You will only be
ofered a general release as an update if there is a gap between that
general release and the start of public betas of the next minor version.

10.11.1's public beta started before 10.11 was released, so public beta
programme members won't be offered 10.11 as an update from the 10.11 GM.

If Apple pauses for breath then you might get to 10.11.1 (final) before
10.11.2 public beta starts. The pacing of minor versions typically slows
down after x.x.2 so that is more likely with 10.11.2 or 10.11.3.
