A friend called me today and stated that his computer completely froze after he initiated an update to El Capitan Beta Version 4 and that he has been totally unsuccessful at unfreezing it. I have been running the El Capitan betas and my update list stops at "Version 3, Installed Jul 30, 2015" There was a subsequent update titled "Command Line Tools (OS X 10.11) beta" which I installed yesterday. I'm curious as to why I haven't received notification for a version 4. -- James Leo Ryan - Austin, Texas

There are more developer betas than public betas, with developer betas starting earlier. We don't know when Apple is planning to release El Capitan to the public: if they follow the pattern of the last two years then it will be at a media event in October, but they might change the pattern and release it in September. Typically there are new developer and public betas every week or two, so even with a September release we should expect at least one more beta before the public release, and there could be time for two. If El Capitan is released in October, there could be four more betas before the public release. Those who have access to the betas also have access to the release notes, which list known issues (problems already reported, which Apple doesn't want to hear about because they are already dealing with them). A good clue to the public release coming soon is if a beta's release notes have no remaining known issues. We aren't at that point yet for El Capitan. A beta having no known issues doesn't rule out there being another beta or two, depending on last minute fixes and timing which suits Apple for the public release. This also relates to release timing of any new Mac models Apple is planning to coincide with the new OS. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

These guys release the developer betas: https://imzdl.com/ https://imzdl.com/osx.html The stuff is legit. I don't know what Apple thinks of this. They (Apple) haven't shut them (IMZDL) down. Anyway, developer betas seem to be up to version 6. -- Where's the Vangelis music? Pris' tongue is sticking out in in the wide shot after Batty has kissed her. All they do is link you to apples official swdist.apple.com server to directly download the update .pkg, which the Mac App Store seems to /fail/ at more so than it should. I swear maybe 1/5 times I download a massive file, and it ever gets paused/disconnected from the network, it will delete the progress it has made and re-start the download. Since apple doesn't seem to post these (technically publicly accessible links) anywhere, I don't mind a third party linking to them so I can simply download the updates from my Web Suite. Granted, I agree that running software that has been re-packaged by a third party for any reason is *never* a good idea. The official build numbers and beta versions are located here: https://developer.apple.com/osx/download/ by the way.

I tried installing Beta 4, and the install just hangs (after the download has completed and I have been requested to restart the computer. The install begins (before actually restarting), gets to roughly the "11 minutes remaining" point, and just .... stops. Nothing further happens. I can then press the power-on button to forcibly kill the computer, and it will reboot back to Beta 3, but Beta 4 won't install...
